Countdown to 'The Great Escape'

Hey Guys!
Lately I've been battling a major block to stay focused on my work because there's been so many distractions. Now the countdown is on, as my show will be on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the JW Marriott on Canal Street. I will be donating a percentage of my proceeds to Scholastic's Read & Rise Book Fair Program to benefit New Orleans Title I Schools. The book fairs were all held this month and Clear Channel radio's seven stations have been in full swing broadcasting about the program. I've even been blessed with some advertising in exchange for my participation. It felt wonderful to hear my spot announced in rotation on the radio and that was a real kick in the pants as it all began to seem so very real at that moment. So now I'm on to fulfill my quest to create the best 12 paintings I've ever exhibited to raise money for those childrens books!!! I hope to see you at the show!

Life is crazy right now as I've been traveling, visiting, creating and delivering artwork, in meetings and working on the plans for my upcoming show later this fall.
This year I'm trying something different and expect this to be the only and best of its kind! I pray that my co-host accepts my invitation as his story is a vital element to my project. Also I am very excited about the new series I will be creating in my new style and medium for the exhibition, and following the path of my other solo shows, a portion of my proceeds will be donated to a local charity. Forbidden to remain the same

Hey guys!
Today I would love to share my latest accomplishment. I was commissioned to do a sculpture and decided to step out of my comfort zone and give it a try. Forbidden was completed on yesterday. It was a labor of love as I have never done a free standing sculpted piece before, and went through alot of trials and errors. Even though my newer works are heavily textured, or sculpted, none have been this elaborate. Thank God for giving me the vision and skills to create a piece at this level. My client is very pleased and proud to display her custom artwork in her home. I am forbidden to remain the same and always open to try something new. Change leads to growth and that is good!

Artists Wanted winner finally revealed!!!

Hey guys,
Thanks again for voting for me and my daughter in "The Power of Self" artists competition. The winner has finally been revealed after weeks of reviewing by the judges. Congrats to the winner, Cheng-Chang Wu from Nan-Tou, Taiwan-a photographer! You can view his work and the other winners work at http://www.artistswanted.org/self/.

The contest was a lot of fun and I had a great time creating my self portrait piece. Although,I do find it strange that a contest open to ALL mediums (Fine Art, Painting, Sculpting, Drawing, Installation, Print Making, Graphic Design, Glass, Book Arts, Performance, Video Art, Street Art/Graffiti, Photography, Tattoo Art) chose 3 PHOTOGRAPHERS as the winners. Not that their work wasn't great, but seems like this should've been a Photography contest. Maybe I'd had a better chance if I'd submitted some of my alter ego photos. I'm sure I could've swayed the judges with my cat woman or indian princess costumes! lol!!!!

But it's all good. Life goes on and obviously that wasn't our blessing to be had. So again, many thanks and much love to you all!

A Repressed Sweets Freak

Hey Guys!
Today is Lent, a time of sacrifice after over-indulging in Mardi Gras. And a good time it was indeed! Anyway I've decided to give up sweets for the next 40 days. Even though I try to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine, I have to have something sweet everyday. Those of you who know me, know that I am really a sweets freak at heart and would prefer eating dessert more than regular food. So NO chocolate, pie, cake, cookies, candy, ice cream, pastries...

Oh my goodness let me get back on track here. I'm going to pour all of my desires for sugar into my projects. A painting from my Reflections 3:28 show, titled "Repression" reminds me of how I will probably be feeling during this time—riding the waves of sugar cravings. lol! Pray that I make it. This isn't going to be easy!

The double-edged sword of being a professional artist

Hey guys,

I was thinking about there being pros and cons to every career. Being an artist is no different. I believe that I was born to be an artist. It is a lifestyle not just a profession. While thinking about the good and bad factors of being a professional artist, I created this list, in no certain order:

The Pros—
• Excitement: It's an interesting career.
• Originality: It provides a creative outlet to express my personality.
• Connection: I'm able to relate to people visually, mentally, emotionally and physically by sharing my work.
• Satisfaction: Earning money from something that I created.
• Independence: Being my own boss means the freedom of working whenever, however, wherever and with whomever I want.

The Cons—
• Pay: It is an unstable source of income.
• Stressful: Having to make decisions like a business takes away from the enjoyment of being a creative.
• Competition: Trying to stand out from the crowd to gain recognition.
• Expensive: The costs for materials, equipment, workspace and marketing can be pricey.
• Respect: It's not perceived as a real profession by those who believe art is a leisure activity.

These are from my personal experience. I would love to find out others perspective of the pros and cons of living the life of a professional artist. So what's on your mind?

Leaving a Legacy

Hey guys,

Today's inspiration is from beyond the grave, the artist Alberto Giacometti whose Walking Man I sculpture sold for $104.3 million dollars and broke a world record. Even though he's not here to reap the benefits of his labor of love, I'm sure his family/foundation is very proud of his achievements. As an artist this has inspired me to continue working hard at my craft —experimenting, adjusting and striving to be a better artist, a better entrepreneur, a better Re (me). Perfection is not realistic. Nothing man-made is ever perfect. But creating art that is appealing to the senses and emotions is timeless. I believe most of us strive to be successful and sell as much of our work as possible, for as much as we can get. Although being able to leave behind a high quality, body of work that will increase in value and maintain its appeal for generations to come, is an artist's ultimate reward here on earth!

So back to work....

Thanks so much for all of your time and votes for me and my daughter's artwork. I truly appreciate your dedication and desire to see me succeed. Unfortunately I was not a winner of the Artists Wanted People's Choice Award for the most votes. Hilary McHone (aka BrooklynHilary) of South Pasedena, Ca and Brooklyn, NY at http://www.artistswanted.org/BrooklynHilary AND Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland at http://www.artistswanted.org/rebekkagudleifsdottir both tied with thousands of votes for their portfolios and won the $1,000 cash, a reception in New York City and international publicity in partnership with Gawker Artists.

Congratulations to both ladies for all of their hard work in promoting their work!!! However, the public voting does not effect the formal judging process which is based on the actual work, not the votes. So keep hope alive and say a prayer or two for me and my daughter's entries. The Grand Prize will be announced once all the portfolios are formally reviewed within the next couple weeks. And there's even still the chance that we'll be contacted by Artists Wanted or others about opportunities to show our work beyond the bounds of the contest in outlets, from press to gallery shows to book editions, etc.

The Power of Self

Hey guys!

I've got a feeling that this is going to be a great year for me! New attitude, new style—artistically and personally, new me! I've been working on a new medium also and have decided that all of my new paintings will be on custom made canvas books as opposed to regular stretched canvas, and of course I'll still be using my bowling pins. The book paintings are sooooo cool! Just imagine having a huge book with some cool art on the cover hanging on your wall. I am loving my 3d textured works. Uniquely RE! lol! My first project this year is an international art contest I'm entering called the Power of Self in which I had to create a self portrait to tell my story. A new mindset for a New Year!

Hey Guys!
We just came from a New Years eve church service. It was very enlightening. I'd already started getting into the mindset of going into the new year with a new frame of mind but the sermon, "Hold No Grudges" really drove it home for me. It was based on the scripture in Phillipians 3:13-14 which talks about letting the past be in the past and moving forward into the future.
I've got some ghosts that keep reappearing on me and I've got to put them to rest. So for those who don't love or respect me like I deserve to be will be bound and thrown out like yesterdays trash. It's always painful when its someone close--a family member or friend. But I've got to move on. I've got things that are expected of me (from a higher power) and it's not in my best interest to waste energy on them with grudges, grief or guilt any longer. With that said, I wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year!!!

Live creatively friends

Hey guys!
I absolutely love being creative. As far back as I can remember I have always been creative. Drawing, painting, writing, being crafty. I could not imagine my life without being that way. Recently I ran across a scripture that says "Live creatively friends" (Galations 6:1), which talks about forgiving someone for their sins without being critical, because at some point in time we ourselves may need forgiveness. I thought that was interesting because I'd never thought of forgiving in terms of creativity. But upon thinking about it, I guess depending on the circumstances of how you were wronged, it may be easier to forgive in a non-traditional sense. Honestly I have had some times when 'sorry' just didn't do it for me and I had to come up with a way to get me past that situation and heal my hurt. Alot of that hurt is released in some of my paintings, along with many, many, many tears. lol! Guess I have experienced 'living creatively' in the biblical sense without realizing it. So my friends, do you have any experiences in living creatively? I'd love to hear about them!

Every year as a family tradition I have my kids write a personal list of things they are thankful for. Even though the two oldest are now grown, I still ask them to do it. Many times its so easy to forget the blessings in our lives, especially the small ones and when things aren't going so well. But it is so nice when you actually sit and think about all the things you have to be thankful for!
I am grateful for soooooooooo much and don't deserve most of what I got! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!!!

Today's painting, titled 107 IGWT #2 is really special. It is part of a series I never finished or showed. While working on those I started experimenting with other media and my paintings went into a whole new direction, so I never finished the series. Although I may one day if I get any requests. Anyway, the paintings spell out IN GOD WE TRUST in 107 pennies. The idea came from my love of pennies and the underdog! Mankind in general puts so much trust into money, yet alot of people deem pennies worthless and would like to take them out of the market. Well I believe that something as invaluable as a penny can be made into something much bigger than itself and that's why I created these paintings. They are a daily proclamation of faith in GOD. Priceless!!!

Today I decided to have my very own art auction and sent out the first email announcing it to my collectors and fans using my Constant Contact program . The idea came from my transitional state right now and my need to clear out more of my older paintings to make room for the new pieces and commissions I'm currently working on.

So here's how it will work. I will send out a new email each day, beginning today, 11/4 through the rest of November with a painting posted and a starting bid. All you have to do is email me back at renecia@reneciabcullier.com with your bidding price. At the end of the day, the person with the highest bid wins that painting! Shipping fees will not be included in the price, but I will give a guesstimate of the cost so you
can take that into consideration before bidding. I will then email the winner to let them know and to set up payment and shipping arrangements (check via mail or Paypal/Credit/Debit on my site). Each day the previous day's winner will be announced in the new email. Bidding will be from noon to midnight. So here's your chance to get the painting you've been having your eye on!

New Orleans, N.O., NOLA, the Big Easy, Crescent City, whatever you call it, it means good times, good people to meet, good sites to see, good food to eat....always entertaining, very cultural, full of pride. I feel good! I am blessed to have this experience in my life. To start life anew. For now I'm taking it all in while its still fresh, but later I look forward to interpreting my experiences and feelings through my artistic vision. This brings to mind a painting from a series I started earlier this year entitled, Femelle. I have to be honest. Realism has never been one of my strong points but I am estatic about the way my new pieces are turning out. It's definitely God cause I'm not taking any painting or sculpting classes, nor have I ever! Although I do pray before I start each piece and ask Him to guide me. I was asked earlier this year by one of my collectors if I could do a painting of Obama. I immediately felt honored and nervous at the request. Honored because this person has bought other pieces from me before and really loved my work but nervous because realism just wasn't 'my thing'. Or so I thought. I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and onto my faith. Here's a sneak peak at the Obama commission I just finished. The unpainted photo shows more of the detail of the actual 3D pieces. It was a wonderful experience and I loved having full creative control and mixing my graphic design and fine art skills. During the creation of this piece, I've been asked to do a few more commissions with this style. I'm loving my life as an artist!!!

I am so excited! Life just never turns out quite as expected. My son and his girlfriend are the new parents of a handsome and healthy baby boy named Acelan! Never thought I'd be a grandma so soon but hey, worse things could happen. I have realized that it's a blessing to be alive and well to see the next generation created from my genes. Thank you Lord for once again blessing me!!!

I created a painting titled, ACELAN in honor of the pregnancy that brought me my first grandchild. It's a 9"h x 12"w 3D sculpted mixed media piece on canvas. I had a great time making it, but it was also a very emotional time for me. One of my babies was having a baby. Wow! So now I have a new name, Yaya which means grandmother in Greek. Gotta have a cute name for a cute grandma!!!

I've got some great news...my husband and I are moving to New Orleans! God is pouring his blessings upon us and the opportunities are wonderful. I'm now at peace with this huge and sudden change and can gladly embrace the things to come. Change is a necessity in life. Without 'real' change there is no growth. Hey yall,
Today I had the pleasure of visiting an old friend who just had a new baby a few weeks ago. It's always a nice change of pace in my schedule when I have the chance to do something like this during a weekday. I was very excited and nervous about the visit because one of my gifts was a custom painting I did of her and her husband from their maternity photos. I decided to name the painting Wonder because they chose not to find out the sex of their baby until it arrived. This was truly a foreign concept to me, being a control freak and all, because I 'had' to know the sex of my babies so I could begin preparing. I'm a planner, very organized, sometimes anal about being on top of things. Until their pregnancy, I'd never known anyone personally who decided not to know. That would drive me insane! I believe this is a fine example of trusting in God's decision and living at peace with it, period. NO ifs, ands or buts about it. They prayed for a healthy and happy baby and they've gotten just that with their adorable little girl. I strive to be at that level of faith one day, but for now it's baby steps to wonderful living!

Path to a more fulfilled life

Hey Yall,
The past couple of weeks have been crazy! It's funny how alot of times I pray for change in my life, but then when it shows up I am afraid to step out of my comfort zone and embrace it. Change comes suddenly when things seem so off the 'right' path. Change never appears in the package I imagined or at the time I requested, but 'coincidently' things seem to fall in place. I've come to know that's a real way to tell if it's God sent.

Right now I am reminded of my painting titled, Path which depicts my walk in life through rough spots, good times, confusing times, moments of clarity, etc. This year, 2009 has definitely proved to be a time of change in my/our life. I'm sure I will have much more to tell you soon! Please keep me and my fam in your prayers.

Hey Yall,
I had a great experience this weekend! On Saturday my family had the opportunity to participate in our cousin, Kathy Taylor's (national recording artist) video shoot for her single titled, I Believe from her latest cd, The Worship Experience. We had a wonderful time— it was nice hanging out with our extended fam, the weather was beautiful, the location was perfect and the food was delicious. Kathy was gorgeous and on point as always with her style and grace. I am so very proud of her and despite her many accomplishments, she remains the same down- to-earth and funny person she's always been. I believe my cousin is destined for even greater things than we all can imagine! She is truly gifted and deserves all that God has prepared for her!

Grandmother's are a blessing!

Hey yall,
Today I had the chance to hang out with my grandmother. She is such a character. At almost 83 years old some of the things she says and does truly amaze me. I hope to be as great a grandmother to my grandchildren as she's been. No matter what I've been through-- good or bad she's always been one of my biggest fans. I do have to admit though that I believe she was the creator of 'tough love' but with her I know its always done from the heart. I'd like to post the pin she 'commissioned' me to do for her when she attended her first showing of my work. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the back of the pin, but it is a tree, like the tree of life, the family tree, that has roots that run deep. That is my grandmother, she is deep, the lifeline that holds our family together. I don't know where my life would be without that woman! I am grateful!!! I think everyone should have a grandmother as great as mine.

Thank you so much for your patience while waiting for my website updates. I am excited about the changes we made and the selection of art I have available. I almost fired my web designer, my husband Alex as we both were frustrated at one point when things weren't working out on the site as I had imagined in my head, but we worked it all out. Lol! And thank God! Anyway, the final look is more streamlined. On the site you'll find a few older paintings that are still awaiting new homes mixed in with some really great new pieces. I think I've finally found a style that is exclusively me and I'm lovin it. As you know, I am really into textures and bold colors, but I have taken that to another level with my new work being more 3-dimensional. The photos just doesn't do them justice. You have to see them personally to fully appreciate all that I've put into my new style!

Sometimes I have to remember to give thanks for things I've been blessed with but take for granted. I am a mother. I love being a mother. As far back as I can remember I have dreamed and desired to be a mother. My life is rich— full of memories, experiences and love that I have given and acquired being a mother. Motherhood is truly a job. It is not something that should be taken lightly and is not for those not totally committed. I believe that as a parent we are chosen to be caretakers of God's most precious creations. That is a huge responsibility. It is a sacrifice. Years ago I even considered being a surrogate mother to help another couple have the opportunity to experience what I have as a parent. Unfortunately things didn't work out, but I was very willing to give the ultimate gift of life.

Todays piece, Mother's Love is actually the very first painting I did back in 2004. It shows the bond between a mother and her child, a connection that is formed in love and remains in tact regardless of all that happens outside the relationship. I was amazed at what I created. It was definitely inspired by love and drew on the talents I'd been holding back all those years. It is indicative of the relationship that I have prided myself on having with my own children. I've been asked many times to sell it but due to the attachment I have and the meaning behind it, it is part of my personal collection.

Gluttony

Hi Pin Pals!
Today I am was just thinking about how many problems I have brought on myself because of gluttony. Most people think of food or drink but Webster also defines gluttony as greedy or excessive indulgence. I am guilty of being a glutton as alot of us are. Anything from food, drinks, sex, drugs, working, material things, etc can make you a glutton. Leading a hedonistic life is dangerous and many times leads to detriment. Looking back I am finally admitting to myself that I have put myself in harms way one too many times because of self gratification. Now is a time for change. This old dog is about to learn some new tricks!

Todays painting is titled, US Debt which is quite appropriate because it represents not just something I'm enduring in my life but the state that many of us Americans are in right now. This huge dollar bill commands attention, is unique and hits home for most who see it.

Expecting...

Hello Pin Pals,
I've had an emotional morning. It hurts me to see someone else suffer or go through bad times. A friend who has a special needs child is going through some rough spots with him right now and its really taking a toll on her. She is stressed and worn thin from the years, time and energy she has to put into his daily care. He advances and then reverts. Everything is always baby steps and she is tired. She has struggled with the thought of why God would give her such a child, but realizes that some things are just meant to be. As we spoke I reminded her of all the good days she's told me he's had. The times he's advanced or learned something new. That all of us have our 'bad days'. I asked her if she'd been praying for him lately and their situation and she said no. I told her that she should because it will help. I also had been urging her for awhile to journal her thoughts, feelings and his progress so that at bad times like this she can look back and see the journey. I've learned that we are never exactly in the same place we think we are. If we journal regularly we will see the progress we make, the answered prayers, the surprises, the twists to our story instead of just dwelling in the present moment when we are at our lowest. I know that trouble don't last always and just as her son has advanced before he will again. Some times you've got to take a few steps back to move forward!

Today's painting is a representation of that conversation this morning, its titled, 'Expecting'. I know usually when you see a large female belly you immediately think about a baby or pregnancy but actually this painting represents us living in a state of expectancy. Every day we wait to hear about something we are expecting—if we got the job, the house, the car, a good report card, the loan, an invitation, etc. I am always expecting something and keep this one on a table in my studio as a reminder of all the things I've asked for and gotten.

Impatience is definitely one of my flaws. However, I've realized that alot of times when I'm in a hurry or trying to find a short cut, it's because it involves stuff I don't want to do, don't like doing or things I'm not very good at. Illustrations have always been one of my weaknesses. Few people know this, but when I first went to college in 1988 at Texas Southern University my major was Fashion Design. I'd always liked drawing and my god-mother, Betty Randall was an instructor there and a great fashion designer, so it seemed like a great idea. Well needless to say I quickly changed it when I saw that everyone else was so much more advanced than me. It was extremely intimidating to find out that something I'd always been praised for by my family and friends meant nothing when I was up against some real competition. Well years later, after several futile attempts at making myself 'fit' into a major -- from fashion design, nursing, business, then marketing, I finally got the nerve to try art school again in 1998, this time at the Art Institute of Houston majoring in Graphic Design. I loved it and felt as though that was where I should've been all along. I still wasn't the best illustrator, but a great designer, especially in packaging. I will never forget my drawing instructor, Mr. Kevin Richert who always told me I wasn't seeing. It was so hard to understand what he was saying, but finally he referred me to this book, 'Drawing from the right side of the brain' and it helped alot. Although I've let many years go by without practicing or trying to get better until recently. I've always wanted to draw/illustrate better, but out of frustration and the desire for perfection I wouldn't. I know that makes no sense at all, but its the truth. Well lately I've been practicing and am very, very proud of some of my drawings. My skill level has improved greatly. Like I would always tell my kids, "practice makes perfect". But I was only partially right, practice makes perfect when doing it the right way. Now I see the fine details and it is really helping my drawing skills. It's all in the eye of the beholder--I thank God for giving me the vision to see!

It is a beautiful morning! Life is good. There's always room for improvement, but I have no reason to complain. I was just thinking about how I am feeling today and what I wanted to write about when one of my favorite paintings, titled Masterpiece caught my eye—"we are God's masterpiece." That is a simple truth that helps on days when I'm feeling down. Although I can appreciate it on good days too! Being an artist is very emotional. I've always been teased by my family and close friends about being a cry-baby. My thoughts and feelings run deep. As I've grown older I've come to realize that my sensitive nature actually is a big part of my gift as an artist. My sensitivity allows me to be in tune to things and people around me. Those feelings allow me to interpret things through my art for others/non-creatives. Now that I understand myself better, I can appreciate those quirky little things that make me, me.

Don't you hate it when you think you have things all figured out? You've been planning, making lists, deciding on how and what you want to happen...then BAM! All of your little plans are thrown off track. Huhhhh! It's so hard to learn to give up control. I know that I am definitely a guilty member of the 'control freaks party'. Its like human nature-- spending a big portion of life trying to 'run' things. It sounds so easy when someone says, 'just give it over to God'. That is so much easier said than done. But I do know that when faith is applied, life seems to feel less stressed and complicated. Things seem to fall into place more...kinda like putting a car on cruise control. I just have to get comfortable with getting out of my own way. Hahahaha!!!

Well my painting today represents life as a roller coaster. It is titled, "Reality" and is a part of my Reflections 3:28 series. It is wild yet soothing and very interesting to see.

As a result of my spiritual journey through journaling and prayer I have learned to pay attention to those moments. I recognize, acknowledge and appreciate those times much, much more than before.

For the past 12 weeks I have been reading and journaling with this book called "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. It was recommended by a great artist friend of mine, Deborah Hill and has been extremely helpful in clearing my creative blockage. I thought twelve weeks was such a huge committment and wasn't so sure I'd make it but thank God I have!!! It is very enlightening and has helped me out in so many ways not just in my art. It puts things into perspective and makes you realize the ways that you think and how much of an impact those thoughts have on your creative output and life in general. The subtitle is "A spiritual path to higher creativity" and it is just that. My piece for today "Hello God, Its me Re" was inspired from one of the tasks in the book where I had to create my own artists prayer.

Yes you read right and No I haven't lost my mind. At least not yet...completely. I came up with this theory this morning while talking to an associate who paints periodically for relaxation. She mentioned wanting to earn some extra cash but not having the time to take on a second job. Of course, me being me, chimed in as I have many times before, and told her that she should paint more and even sell her work to friends and family who have asked her previously about her work. Well she told me that her mojo was on vacation, her painting wasn't that good and that mine was different and real. I couldn't believe what she was telling me especially since I didn't know that I could really paint until four years ago when I was encouraged by some of my graphic designer friends who also painted. And those are the same kind of excuses I gave them. Her words rang so clear in my head and I knew that I had to encourage her to try just as my friends did for me. I told her that painting is like making love. It requires the right mood, some skill and knowing your spot. Of course it gets even better with time cause 'practice makes perfect'! I know first-hand that you can't allow fear and negativity to control your life. Doing so will guarantee that you never become great in your gifts/talents. God gives everyone something but you've got to try— you have to use them. And I'd never really given any thought to what painting was like before today but at the exact moment of having that conversation with my associate it all became crystal clear, painting is like making love! Well I think I've said a mouthful. Til next time.

As one door closes....

I am sadly happy today. After much debate we've decided to move out of my studio in Woodwind Square and back into our apartment at the end of the lease in October. You know how they say as one door closes, another always opens? That is so true. Within days of our decision I've been granted a new job venture with great possibilities for my career AND another new opportunity to expand my business. Now I just need to figure out how to get all my studio stuff back into the apartment, along with the collection of art that I still have available to sell. Any buyers out there? Bowling Pin Plaques--my latest creation!

I am so very excited about my latest creation--bowling pin plaques! They are basically half a bowling pin with a flat backside which allows them to be hung on the wall and of course the same great art on the front and sides as I've always done. This idea was actually generated as a result of being asked to come up with something that could be used as a give-away in lieu of a traditional thank-you plaque. Remember the Bowl for Kids' Sake event that I participated in about a month ago as a vendor for Big Brothers Big Sisters? Well they needed a little something, something to show their appreciation to their sponsors and whala--there you have it, the Bowling Pin Plaque!!! Exhibitionist--look at my art!

Hello Pin Pals!
Just a quick question for today. What would be your first thought if you saw the word 'Exhibitionist"written on the front of someone's shirt? Well in my daily excursions I've found that alot of people normally think the worst of a situation before they find out more. The reason I'm asking is that I have these shirts that I wear to get attention for my web gallery to drum up more business. The front of the shirt says "exhibitionist--look at my art!" and the back has www.refineartgallery.com. Well of course I chose the wording carefully to get attention but you'd be surprised at the looks I get because they only read exhibitionist first without reading the next lines. I laugh every time I see someone reading and have this weird look on their face. It makes me feel like telling them to get their mind out of the gutter! hahhaha!!! Of course after they read on and see the website address is a gallery the red face syndrome suddenly disappears. One day a sales clerk in a store stopped my husband and I and asked him why would he let me wear a shirt like that?!!! Then as 'she' was speaking she continued reading the next lines then looked at the back of the shirt and said....."Oh." Needless to say she was very embarrassed. So Pin Pals if you ever see me out in one of my company tees know what I'm all about....my art....exhibiting....showing my ART!

Houston's Big Bowl for Big Brothers,Big Sisters

Hey Pin Pals!
The Bowl for Kids Sake on Saturday was wonderful! The pins got a lot of attention as usual....very eye catching. Some of the bowlers were so excited when they saw the pin display because they thought that they were going to be the trophies. Now that's the ultimate compliment from bowlers! We saw some familiar faces and met alot of new people including some adorable 'Littles' at the event. Alex and I even bowled a for a little while with this team of two very interesting ladies. Got my picture taken with the pins by the Houston Chronicle, had plenty of good food, and best of all came home with a couple of commissions. I love being an artist! Overall the Bowl for Kids Sake' was very successful for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Houston. Oh and by the way, if any of you would actually like to donate you still can, their fundraiser continues through November...just log onto their website. Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake

Just a quick message to say hello. It's time to bowl! Tomorrow is the big show I'm doing with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization's 'Bowl for Kids Sake' where I will be exhibiting my pins and donating 30% of the proceeds to their organization. It's always exciting to be able to show my work to more people who've never seen it before. The added bonus here is that a portion of my sales go to helping them raise money to maintain their very needed program for adults (Bigs) who help volunteer their time to help children (Littles) reach their full potential through one-to one mentoring relationships. Their goal is to raise $200,000. Every little bit helps and it feels good to know that my donation will get them dollars closer to reaching their goal! In taking full advantage of my new studio I think I'll start having an open studio once a month in order to bring awareness to the area. It's always nice to meet someone new and get their perspective on my work. I love getting feedback even if it doesn't lead to a sell. After all the reality of this business is that it really doesn't matter how I feel about my art if no one else is interested in it or 'gets' it. Fortunately I really haven't had that experience, I've been blessed and regularly sell my work. However things still aren't easy and I am always hustling trying to find new and better ways to expand my fan base. Yes I said fan base. See I've learned that fans are the greatest asset of all in anything you do. Fans stick by you when fairweather friends don't. Fans compliment you, but they also aren't afraid to tell you what they don't like. They tell you what they want and when they want it. Fans buy your work because they see it as an investment, something valuable that has a connection to someone they know and love. Fans feel that they succeed when you succeed. Fans are not haters and genuinely have your best interest at heart! Fans are really the key to any successful venture. Ahhhh! I Love My Fans, and pray that God continues to bring me more along with the vision and creativity to keep doing my thang! Well on that note I've gotta go.... someone's at the door, possibly my next F-A-N!!!

Open Studio-$100 painting sale

Its been awhile. Been busy juggling projects. My latest venture is an Open Studio show this weekend in which I will be selling all of my 'color' paintings for only $100 each. Wow! Bowl for Kids Sake 2008

Alex and I had a 'ball' at the Kickoff Celebration for the Bowl for Kids Sake 2008 Fundraiser! We had the opportunity to meet some great people. Some of the folks we met actually worked for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Houston Organization, some donate their generous time as a 'Big' (mentor) to a 'Little' (child) in the program and a few are financial supporters that make sure the program is able to continue providing its vital services to children. It was very interesting to hear different perspectives of the program from people who are all dedicated to the success of BBBS. I received many raves about my pins. Everyone thought they were so unique and a perfect touch to their Bowl for Kids Sake fundraising event! Several people even inquired if I would be attending their follow up events 'with my pins'. I am so very greatful that my path crossed Rosalind Moore's again! She is an old business associate and friend who is now the Fund Development Administrator/Coordinator of the Bowl for Kids Sake program. It is going to be great working with her and Big Brothers Big Sisters! Once again my art will work for change, as I will donate 30% of my proceeds to them from their upcoming events!!!

I am so excited!!! I am all moved in to my new studio. I'm happy to be working on ideas for upcoming projects and commissions. And I've received an invite to work as a vendor at the Bowl for Kids Sake 2008 Kickoff Celebration hosted by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization of Greater Houston (BBBS). Actually this will be the first of several events I will be working with them on. I can't wait to see the response I get from new prospects who have never seen my beautiful bowling pins. Moving again---new studio!

Busy, busy, busy! I'm moving again. I finally found a new studio space, actually in the same strip where my show was held last Saturday. It's a great spot on the northwest side of Houston, great owner, nice & friendly neighborhood. It is in the Woodwind Square shopping center located at 8211 Windfern Road. I'm so looking forward to working in this new place! My gallery will continue to be on-line, as the space will be my actual studio/workroom...where all the magic happens! Hahahha! My art worked for change!

Well the reflections 3:28 show has come and gone! Ahhhh! I can breathe now. Hahaha! Anyway, I am proud of my first solo exhibition. I had a nice turnout--a few were newcomers, collected some donations and sold a few pieces which allowed me to donate 50% of my proceeds to the Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) as planned. I am so thankful to God, my husband and kids, Jesse who owns the venue (1834/Freeway Films), my great friends Marcia and Mary and last but not least, my son's girlfriend, Christian for helping make this event a success! I could not have done it without them. Painting the new series was the easy part compared to all the other things that had to be done.
However since the show didn't totally sell out, I will continue to donate 50% of all the sales to HAWC until the series is gone. So there is still time to get a great painting to accent your home or office while helping provide vital funds for the women and children the center assists. The remaining paintings will be posted for sale on my site by Monday, April 7th.

My art works for change...charity art show!

Hello Pin Pals!
Nine days and counting til the show, reflections 3:28. I am really excited about this body of work. It is a blessing to be able to create 28 pieces that depict my emotional state over 40 years. The work is all new, never seen..it's fresh and different from other works I've created. I think you will be pleased with my exhibition. I have met many new friends over the past couple of months while working on this project. It's amazing how things kinda just fall in place once the ball is rolling. Thank God! There is no way I could do all this by myself. I know He's there, I can feel him. I've been looking for a miracle, expecting the impossible, feeling the intangible and seeing the invisible. I am focused and paying attention to my journey. I am enjoying every difficult and tedious moment because I know all of my hard work will pay off. Not to mention that I've got some people depending on me and this show...the Houston Area Women's Center. It feels good to be able to pursue my passion and use my time, talent and treasure to do something nice for someone else. My art works for change and I am estatic about that! Charity Art Show--reflections 3:28

On Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 7-10pm I will be hosting a charity art show benefitting the Houston Area Women's Center. I have created a new body of work titled, reflections 3:28 which is celebration of my forty year journey of orderly chaos. This show and others I do from this point on are about me giving back. I am committed to inspire and uplift the lives of others by donating my time, talent and treasure to invest in God's greatest asset—humanity. I will provide change through knowledge, love and sacrifice. As of March 1, 2008, 50% of all my art sales will be donated to the charity I am currently working with. This is going to be my greatest birthday celebration ever and I look forward to seeing you there. Live life passionately!

Hey Pin Pals,
After unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to squeeze more time out of a day, I've decided to give up! I have such a hard time getting 'enough' done. Well I've decided that I am going to live my life passionately and quit trying to get every little thing done. I've also did some soul searching and realized the path I want my career to take. Refine Art Gallery is where 'art works for change'. I am going to donate 50% of all my art sales to charity organizations. My first project is to do a fundraiser for The Houston Area Women's Center because it ties into my 'reflections' series on my life in being a survivor of toxic relationships. I am blessed to be where I am today as opposed to where I was then. My life was a mess. Well being who I am today I would like to give back. It's my turn to do something for someone else. So from this point on I will live my life passionately with my God at the forefront of my life, spending more quality time with my family and friends, doing things I've been putting off and being bold in my faith to step out and do things I've been afraid to do. My actions will make a difference in the lives of others!

I've been working hard on my marketing plans for this year. As I've mentioned before, I am ready to lose some of the things that have been keeping me from attaining the level of success I desire and this is 'my season'! I have been praying for it. I have also been working on my new series titled, 'reflections 3:28....in celebration of 40 years of Re. That's right. I will be 40 this year and I have come to realize, appreciate and understand that over the years I have grown tremendously in spite of my troubles. I know that not everything is black and white, but there is a huge gray area in almost every situation imaginable. And that gray area is not always an easy path to take, but can be the best way. This series is a journey of orderly chaos, materialized from paths of self-discovery, emotions, faith and imagination...a state of refining. I believe my art is relative to everyday human life. Someone, somewhere can relate to the experiences I reveal with the strokes of my brush. Through my use of bold black to stark white, broad strokes and textures, I put an interesting twist on real life situations. Stay tuned for more info on my upcoming show so that I can share this new work with you all!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Just a quick note to acknowledge the reason for this season. It amazes me how many people want the perks from Christmas like the shopping, gift giving/receiving and feasts, but don't want to bring 'religion' into it! Wow!!! That really amazes me. That is like going to a person's birthday party that you don't like and not acknowledge them, but you remain at the party to enjoy the festivities...the food, dancing, socializing, etc. That is alot of nerve. I really don't understand some folks and don't know if I ever will. Well Happy Birthday Jesus! And on that note, many blessings to those of you who respect the holiday and even more for those who don't! I've got to get back to my paintings. I am working on a new series for the coming year! Thanks to everyone for all of your support and kind words! Today is the ART CRAWL and I am so hyped!!! The pre-party last night was fantastic. I met some wonderful people and a few new contacts. I can feel it and today is going to be GREAT! I will be moving out of the Houston Foundry at the end of the month and will be getting a studio space to share with my hubby by January. As a result, I've reduced the prices on everything in my studio so that I won't have much to move or store. Call me crazy but, I'd rather my work be in someone's home than in storage! : ) I even had a few clients last night question my prices and tell me that they were too cheap compared to most, but I told them my reason behind the prices and that just means a great deal for them! Crowded Studio Art Sale!!!

My greatest accomplishment to date was creating my largest painting ever!!! It was a commission for a friend and is 6ft by 6ft on 4 canvas panels. Within the next few weeks we should have it hung in her place and I'll have some great pics to share. I had a great time creating that piece, but was somewhat restrained because of limited space in my studio. Sorry I haven't written in awhile. I'd just like to give you a quick little update on my last project which was Art in Action sponsored by the YES Prep school for some of the students and staff to help raise money for a trip to Guana in July. The show was held at the Museum of Natural Science on May 11th. Unfortunately I was not able to attend because that was the same night of my oldest daughter's graduation from college. Although I did have a very close friend, Mary Wells who also participated in the fundraiser and was able to take some photos of the event and my art for me. And thanks again Mary if you're reading this!!! Anyway, I was told that the event was alot of fun and very successful. I'll keep you posted on my next event! : )
